With the abundance of bait available these days it is hard to say what baits out preform others. So we need to take a look at what each bait offers and evaluate what will preform the best for us under each of our certain conditions. First off let’s look at grains, granola, and nuts. These are often found in mixes like trail mix,or a COB (corn, oats, and barley) mix. These do bring certain items to the table that we need, such as protein and carbohydrates. You might be surprised to know that feeding to much of these baits will actually slow a bears metabolism down and make them use digestive energy to process the bait. Thus making them tired and less likely to come back at a consistent time. Baiting is about finding the right balance of great taste and texture and offering quality feed at a cheap of free price point. The shear volume is a problem so we have to also look at the money factor when deciding what to bait with. Things to stay away from would be chocolate for sure. It contains Theobromine and is very deadly to bears. Theobromine will cause upset stomach and in severe cases death. We recommend popcorn, wafer cookies, sugar cones, and other light easy to digest foods that a bear can easily grab out of a stump or barrel. Comfort foods if you will. You want to create a comfortable environment that offers little or no stress for the bears. Top this happy place of with a source of clean quality bait. Remember if you would not eat it don’t feed it to the bears.
